Six schools serving grades 5–12 are listed in zip code 41501, with enrollments ranging from 14 to 561; results and grade spans vary across this group. The clearest achievement comparison is among Pikeville High School, Shelby Valley High School, and Pike County Central High School, which share results for six subjects in grades 10 and 11. Together, their 2025–2026 average was 54% proficient, compared with 39% for the state, with the strongest group advantage in writing: 71% versus 47%. The central takeaway is that the area’s overall results are above the state average, but school-to-school differences are substantial.

Pikeville High School stands out at the top: it led the other two schools in all six matched subjects, averaging 73% proficient and exceeding state results by 29 to 41 points. Its average was 35 points above Pike County Central High School, the lowest of the three at 39%; Pike County Central was below the state in science, social studies, and editing and mechanics. Shelby Valley High School was in between, averaging 52%, and had especially strong writing and editing results. Graduation outcomes also differ: Pikeville’s rate was 100%, Pike County Central’s 99%, and Shelby Valley’s 95%, versus 94% statewide.

Recent changes favor Shelby Valley and Pikeville overall, but not every subject improved: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Shelby Valley’s six-subject average rose 8 points and Pikeville’s rose 5, while Pike County Central’s fell 4. SchoolDigger ranked Pikeville 1st of 262 statewide, Shelby Valley 39th, Pike County Central 137th, and Northpoint Academy 261st of 276 in 2025–2026. Attendance is another point of contrast: chronic absenteeism was 21% at Pikeville, 36% at Pike County Central, and 46% at Shelby Valley, compared with 24% statewide. The 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible measure was 31% at Pikeville, 52% at Pike County Central, and 63% at Shelby Valley; these are contextual differences, not explanations of results. Student-teacher ratios were 13.4 at Pikeville, 16.5 at Pike County Central, and 15.2 at Shelby Valley. Northpoint’s current test results are suppressed, and no test scores were supplied for Pike County Virtual Academy or Pike County Day Treatment.
