Summary:

Zip code 40330 has two elementary schools: Mercer County Elementary School, serving PK–2, and Mercer County Intermediate School, serving grades 3–5. Only the Intermediate School has test scores, so achievement cannot be compared between the two schools. Its clearest strength is reading: in 2025–2026, all three tested grades scored 8–10 points above Kentucky.

Mercer County Intermediate stands out for strong reading and generally higher-than-state results: nine of its ten reported grade-and-subject results were above Kentucky. Reading scores were 59% in grade 3, 60% in grade 4 and 59% in grade 5, compared with state results of 49%, 50% and 51%. Grade 5 writing was the main weakness: 28% of students were proficient, 7 points below the state’s 35%. The Elementary School cannot be placed above or below it on achievement because it has no supplied test scores. Chronic absenteeism offers one other comparison: it was 11% at the Intermediate School and 20% at the Elementary School in 2025–2026; both were below the state rate of 24%.

Results improved overall, though not in every subject. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the Intermediate School’s average across grades 3–5 rose from 42% to 47% in mathematics, while Kentucky’s average stayed near 43%; in reading, the school average rose from 54% to 59%, compared with a state increase from 49% to 50%. Grade 5 writing moved in the opposite direction, falling from 37% to 28%, while Editing and Mechanics climbed from 37% to 55%. SchoolDigger’s ranking also improved, from 437th of 685 schools (36th percentile) in 2023–2024 to 245th of 684 (64th percentile) in 2025–2026. As context, in 2024–2025, 60% of Intermediate students and 66% of Elementary students were free/reduced lunch eligible; student-teacher ratios were similar at 15.4 and 15.1, respectively.
