Summary:

The five schools in Hancock County include two elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools, including an alternative program, serving students from elementary through high school. The most recent results show real differences by school, grade and subject: South Hancock Elementary averaged 4 points above state results across its reported tests, while North Hancock Elementary averaged 1 point below. Across 35 comparable school-grade results, the average school-to-state gap barely changed over the two years. The main takeaway is that the area is broadly steady overall, even as individual schools and grades show notably different results.

Hancock County High School stands out in the latest high-school results: it was above the state in four of six subjects and averaged 5 points above state rates; its graduation rate was 97%, compared with 94% statewide. South Hancock averaged 4 points above the state, including grade 4 science at 58% proficient versus 40% statewide. Hancock County Middle School averaged 3 points above state results, while North Hancock averaged 1 point below. The elementary schools’ strengths depend on grade and subject: South led grade 3 reading by 18 points, but North led grade 5 reading by 11; South led grade 5 math by 15. The alternative program has 16 students, and its proficiency results are suppressed.

Recent trends also differ: Hancock County Middle’s comparable results rose by an average of 7 points, while North Hancock’s fell by 4; South Hancock and the high school each declined by about 1 point on average. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose from 35 to 47 for North Hancock, from 59 to 62 for the middle school and from 58 to 62 for South Hancock, while the high school’s fell from 86 to 68. As context, the 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible measure was 59% at North Hancock and 51% at South Hancock; student-teacher ratios were 14.2 and 13.0, respectively. These figures describe different aspects of the schools and do not explain their test results.
