Summary:

ZIP code 67204 has five Wichita elementary schools, all serving prekindergarten through grade 5, with 1,944 students combined. Results vary sharply: Earhart Environ Magnet Elementary and McLean Science/Technical Magnet Elementary are the clear standouts, while Cloud Elementary, Ortiz Elementary School and Pleasant Valley Elementary are below state rates in all three subjects. The most important finding is that the ZIP code’s schools do not offer a uniform academic picture: only Earhart and McLean exceed state results in both ELA and science, and they are also the only schools above Wichita district rates in all three subjects.

Earhart leads all-grades ELA at 57%, while McLean leads math at 45% and science at 52%; Earhart’s ELA result is 4 percentage points above McLean’s, and McLean leads Earhart in math by 5 points. At the other end, Cloud has the lowest ELA and science rates, at 19% and 15%, while Ortiz has the lowest math rate, at 10%. Across all five schools, average results are 37% in ELA, 25% in math and 31% in science, compared with state rates of 46%, 41% and 38%. Math is furthest below the state average, by 16 points; science is closest, by 7 points. Earhart and McLean also differ by grade, so their overall leads do not mean either tops every grade and subject.

Recent movement is mixed: the school-group average was nearly unchanged in ELA, rose 3 points in math and fell 2 points in science. The ELA gap with the state widened from 8 to 9 points, while the math and science gaps narrowed from 17 to 16 points and from 8 to 7 points. Individual trends also differ: McLean fell 9 points in ELA, 4 in math and 10 in science, while Earhart gained 8 points in ELA. SchoolDigger rankings show McLean dropping from 92nd to 278th statewide over three years, even though its current scores remain among the area’s strongest; Earhart improved from 311th to 297th. The two higher-scoring schools also report lower free/reduced-lunch rates (60% and 63%) and chronic absenteeism (12% and 13%) than the other three; these are differences between schools, not explanations for test results.
