Summary:
ZIP code 67204 has six schools in Wichita: five elementary schools serving prekindergarten through grade 5 and one middle school serving grades 6–8; there are no high schools. In 2025–26, the six-school averages were 35% proficient in ELA, 24% in math and 29% in science, each below the state averages of 46%, 41% and 38%, respectively. The most important finding is how much results vary by school: the gap between the highest- and lowest-scoring schools was 38 percentage points in ELA, 35 in math and 38 in science.
Earhart Environ Magnet Elementary led ELA at 57%, 11 points above the state, while McLean Science/Technical Magnet Elementary led math at 45% and science at 52%—4 and 14 points above state results. McLean was also second in ELA at 54%. At the lower end, Cloud Elementary had the lowest ELA and science results, at 19% and 15%, and Ortiz Elementary School had the lowest math result, at 10%. Cloud, Ortiz and Pleasant Valley Elementary were below state averages in all three subjects. SchoolDigger placed Earhart and McLean at the 55th and 58th statewide percentiles; the other four schools were at the 9th percentile or lower.
Recent results show different paths: Earhart improved in all three subjects from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while McLean fell by 9 points in ELA, 4 in math and 10 in science. Across all six schools, math rose by 3 points on average, science fell by 2 and ELA was essentially unchanged. McLean remains a local standout, but its SchoolDigger ranking dropped from the 86th to the 58th percentile; Earhart moved from the 52nd to the 55th. The two magnets also reported lower free/reduced-lunch rates (60% and 63%) and chronic absenteeism (12% and 13%) than the other schools, where absenteeism ranged from 25% to 28%; these are contextual differences, not explanations for scores. A lower student–teacher ratio alone does not identify the higher-scoring school: Ortiz’s ratio was 13.8, compared with Earhart’s 17.2.
