Middle Schools in Hutchinson Public Schools

Hutchinson Public Schools has two middle schools serving grades 7–8, with 548 students combined. In 2025–26, their average proficiency was 29% in English language arts (ELA) and 23% in math, compared with state results of 46% and 41%. The schools’ average shortfalls were 17 percentage points in ELA and 18 points in math. The most important finding is that both schools remain well below state proficiency in ELA and math, even as their trends differ by subject.

Neither school leads in every subject. Hutchinson Middle School 8 had the stronger ELA result, at 30%, versus 27% at Hutchinson Middle School 7, a 4-point difference. Middle School 7 led in math, at 28% versus 19%, a 10-point gap. Middle School 8 also led in science, with 29% compared with Middle School 7’s reported 0%; the state result was 38%. Both schools were below the state in all three subjects. SchoolDigger ranked Middle School 8 316th of 368 schools (14th percentile) and Middle School 7 346th of 368 (6th percentile), placing both in the lower part of the statewide distribution.

Recent progress also differs: Middle School 8 improved by 8 percentage points in ELA, 1 point in math and 6 points in science from 2024–25, while Middle School 7 declined by 1 point in ELA and 3 points in math. Middle School 8’s better SchoolDigger position than Middle School 7’s does not put it near the statewide midpoint. The schools have similar student–teacher ratios—11.6 at Middle School 8 and 12.2 at Middle School 7—but Middle School 8 had higher chronic absenteeism (30% versus 18%) and a higher free/reduced-lunch rate (76% versus 70%). These are context measures, not explanations for achievement; the results offer no consistent subject-by-subject advantage for either school.
