Summary:

Nickerson has five schools: two elementary schools serving PK–6, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative school, offering families options across the school years. Across the five schools, average proficiency is 41% in ELA and 38% in math, both below state results, while the 48% science average is above the state. The clearest overall standout is Nickerson Elementary, which leads the group in all three subjects.

Nickerson Elementary posts 64% proficiency in ELA, 62% in math, and 84% in science—18, 21, and 46 percentage points above state results, respectively. Its lead over the other four schools’ average is also substantial: 29 points in ELA, 30 in math, and 45 in science. At the other end, Central State Academy has the lowest results in every subject: 13% ELA, 3% math, and 18% science. Nickerson High is a math bright spot at 51%, 10 points above the state. For a same-grade comparison between the elementary schools, Nickerson Elementary leads South Hutchinson Elementary in math by 22 points in grade 3, 40 in grade 5, and 46 in grade 6; South Hutchinson is 3 points ahead in grade 4.

Recent changes are mixed: the five-school ELA average rose 2 percentage points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, narrowing its gap below the state from 6 points to 5, while math rose 1 point as the state rose 2, widening the gap from 2 points to 3. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking for Nickerson High climbed from 18 in 2023–24 to 76 in 2025–26; Nickerson Elementary rose from 72 to 84. The elementary schools report similar free/reduced-lunch rates—58% at South Hutchinson and 59% at Nickerson Elementary—but very different results; that context does not explain the difference. Because schools serve different grade spans, all-grades comparisons are best read alongside same-grade results.
