Summary:

Southern Lyon County has four schools: two elementary schools serving prekindergarten through fifth grade and two junior/senior high schools serving grades 6–12. In 2025–26, their average proficiency was 41% in English language arts (ELA), 44% in math, and 39% in science, compared with state averages of 46%, 41%, and 38%. The clearest area-wide concern is ELA: the schools’ average was 5 percentage points below the state, while their averages were 3 points above in math and 1 point above in science.

Olpe Elementary led in ELA and science, with 56% and 54% proficiency—13 and 15 points ahead of the next school, respectively. Olpe Junior/Senior High School led in math at 55%, 4 points ahead of the next school and 14 points above the state. At the other end, Hartford Junior/Senior High School had the lowest ELA and science results, at 27% and 29%; Neosho Rapids Elementary had the lowest math result, at 33%. SchoolDigger’s rankings also set Olpe Junior/Senior High apart: it ranked 14th of 340 statewide, in the 96th percentile with 5 stars. Olpe Elementary ranked 228th of 657 with 3 stars; Neosho Rapids ranked 512th of 657 and Hartford 281st of 340, each with 1 star.

Recent changes were mixed. Hartford’s math rose 10 points and science 15 points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, but its ELA fell by 1 point. Science moved in opposite directions at the elementary schools: Olpe rose 17 points, while Neosho Rapids fell 20. SchoolDigger’s three-year percentile history also shows contrasting paths: Olpe Junior/Senior High rose from 90 to 96, while Neosho Rapids fell from 49 to 22. Lower student-teacher ratios did not correspond to higher scores in these school pairs: Neosho Rapids had a ratio of 9.1 compared with Olpe Elementary’s 12.3, and Hartford’s was 8.8 compared with Olpe Junior/Senior High’s 13.1, even though the schools with higher ratios scored better in all three subjects in each comparison. Reported free/reduced-lunch rates ranged from 27% at Olpe Junior/Senior High to 56% at Hartford.
