Summary:
Goessel’s two schools serve PK–12: Goessel Elementary covers PK–5 and enrolls 118 students, while Goessel High serves grades 6–12 and enrolls 154. The most important difference is mathematics: Elementary reports 72% proficiency compared with 46% at High, a 26-point gap, although both are above Kansas’s 41% rate.
High stands out in all-grades English language arts (ELA), with 60% proficiency versus 56% at Elementary; both exceed the state rate of 46%, by 14 and 10 points, respectively. Elementary leads in mathematics, while science results are close: 41% at Elementary and 39% at High, compared with 38% statewide. High also reports a 100% graduation rate, 11 points above the state rate. Chronic absenteeism is below the state’s 18% at both schools: 12% at High and 14% at Elementary.
ELA and mathematics results rose at both schools from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while science fell. High gained 11 points in ELA and 10 in mathematics; Elementary gained 8 points in ELA and 28 in mathematics. Elementary’s science rate dropped 29 points, from 70% to 41%, the sharpest decline; High’s fell 3 points. SchoolDigger rankings improved over the three years shown: High moved from 155th of 318 to 52nd of 340, and Elementary from 418th of 653 to 169th of 657. Student-teacher ratios are similar—9.2 at High and 9.6 at Elementary—while free/reduced-lunch rates are 24% and 37%, respectively; these are contextual differences, not explanations for results. Grade-level exceptions include High’s grade 7 mathematics result, 23 points below the state, and Elementary’s grade 5 ELA and science results, 4 and 5 points below state rates. Because the schools serve different grades and enroll relatively small groups, all-grades comparisons can conceal grade-specific variation.
