Summary:
Fredonia has three schools serving pre-K through grade 12: Fredonia Early Learning Center (pre-K–K), Lincoln Elementary (grades 1–6), and Fredonia Junior/Senior High School (grades 7–12). Test scores are available for the elementary and high schools, but not the Early Learning Center. The clearest area-wide concern is that both tested schools are below Kansas in all-grades ELA and math proficiency: their two-school averages are 37% in ELA versus 46% statewide and 32% in math versus 41% statewide.
The schools’ strengths differ by subject: the high school leads in ELA at 39%, compared with Lincoln’s 35%, while Lincoln leads in math, 34% to 30%, and science, 42% to 27%. Lincoln’s science result is 3 points above the 38% state rate; the high school is 11 points below it. Lincoln’s sixth-grade results are another bright spot: 51% proficient in both ELA and math, exceeding state rates by 9 and 10 points, respectively, despite much weaker ELA and math results in grades 3–5. The high school also stands out for graduation: its 95% rate is 6 percentage points above the state’s 90% rate, even though its all-grades test results trail the state in every subject.
Recent progress is mixed. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the two-school average rose 2 points in ELA and 5 in math, while the state rose 1 and 2 points; science fell 7 points locally, compared with a 3-point state decline. The high school’s SchoolDigger percentile rose from 3 to 24 in the latest year after falling from 13, while Lincoln’s declined from 55 to 38 to 26 across the three years shown. Lincoln also has a lower student–teacher ratio than the high school, 11.1 versus 14.4, and lower chronic absenteeism, 19% versus 21%; these are useful context, not explanations for score differences.
