Westlane Middle School is a mid-sized public school with 754 students in grades 6–8 on Indianapolis's north side, one of three middle schools in MSD Washington Township. The most important fact for parents is its trajectory: over four straight years Westlane has climbed from the 30th to the 47th percentile of Indiana middle schools (257th of 486 in 2025–2026) and now holds two stars, after spending most of the 2010s in the bottom quarter of the state. The gains are broad — English/language arts proficiency rose about 10.6 points over three years to 34.38%, math about 11.7 points to 27.25%, and science about 15.3 points to 43.09%.

Chronic absenteeism is now a genuine strength. It fell from 46% in 2020–21 to 16.6% in 2024–25 — essentially the state average — even though Westlane serves a high-poverty population, with 54.4% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Attendance improved a year ahead of the test-score surge, which suggests it may be helping drive the gains.
