Summary

Charles A Tindley Accelerated School is a charter school serving 309 students in grades 7 through 12 in the Meadows neighborhood of northeast Indianapolis, operating as its own single-school district. It is one of the smaller secondary schools in its immediate area — larger than Rooted School Indianapolis (150 students) and Purdue Polytechnic High School North (229), but less than half the size of Herron High School, Shortridge High School or Arsenal Technical High School.

The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks 337th of 374 Indiana districts (10th percentile), and 356th of 415 high schools (14th percentile) in 2025-26. That reflects a long slide: Tindley sat at the 93rd percentile statewide in 2015-16 and has mostly declined since, settling into the 9th–22nd percentile band in recent years. Proficiency now sits near the bottom of its peer group — 30% of students met the SAT reading standard in 2025-26 and 7.5% met the SAT math standard, against 51.9% and 25.6% statewide. Middle-grade ELA and math results improved to their best levels since 2022-23, but even those gains are less than half the state rate, and SAT math has never exceeded 13% over four years.

Two things stand out. First, engagement is a relative strength: the 82.8% graduation rate ranks 4th of 9 nearby schools, and chronic absenteeism (29.7%) is 3rd-best of the 8 schools reporting, down from 54.8% in 2021-22. Students are showing up and finishing — but not reaching standard, which points at instruction rather than attendance. Second, spending is not the differentiator: Tindley spends $19,128 per student, roughly 59% more than Herron High School ($12,031, 97th percentile) or Purdue Polytechnic High School North ($12,103). Finally, with about 50 students per graduating class, year-to-year swings can hinge on a handful of students, so multi-year trends matter more than any single number. Excel Center - Meadows is literally next door, but it is a non-traditional completion program, not an academic peer.

We have two sons that graduated from Tindley. They both received full academic scholarships. I am very pleased with the academic prestige of this school. If your child has the drive and desire to excel they will carry out the vision of this school. Close Quote

Charles A. Tindley is a very good school, but there is no parent information center, no info sent home,and no diversity, students do not learn to enter act with kids of other races. Great if you want your kids in an all black school. It needs to be more diverse!!! Like the world. Close Quote
