Summary

Inter-American Elementary Magnet School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with an enrollment of 637 students. The school's academic performance has been mixed, with relatively strong results in English Language Arts (ELA) but weaker outcomes in Mathematics compared to the Chicago Public Schools District 299 and the state of Illinois.

While Hawthorne Elementary Scholastic Academy and Blaine Elementary School, located nearby, have consistently outperformed Inter-American Elementary Magnet School in both ELA and Mathematics, the school has outperformed Brennemann Elementary School, which has struggled significantly. Inter-American Elementary Magnet School has also faced challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20.5% to 40.8% over the past few years.

The school's performance appears to be influenced by the socioeconomic status of its student population, with a relatively high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds compared to the higher-performing nearby schools. Addressing chronic absenteeism and improving outcomes for English Language Learner (ELL) students and students with disabilities should be key priorities for the school as it works to enhance its overall academic performance.

Open Quote We were so excited to have our 4 year old accepted at their pre school. On the first day of school we come to find out our child speaks better Spanish than the teacher! The teacher speaks Spanish very poorly and had misspelled 'Bienvenidos' on the board. She had other Spanish misspellings on the 'Welcome' board as well. The classroom was not colorful and interactive. The stuffed animals she used to designate English/Spanish areas were filthy! The teacher was not prepared to tell us what the kids were going to be learning that year or their daily routine. She has been teaching there for 8 years, is not bilingual, and should not be teaching at a dual language school. When we asked the principal to have our child switched to the other classroom, he refused. We removed him from the school. What a disappointment. Close Quote
