Summary

North Chicago Community High School is a public high school serving 870 students in grades 9-12 in North Chicago, Illinois, which is part of the North Chicago School District 187.

The school faces significant challenges, consistently performing well below the state averages in academic assessments such as the ACT, PreACT Secure, and SAT. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 14.7% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in ACT English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 51.7%, and only 6.8% were proficient or better in ACT Mathematics, compared to the state average of 39.3%. Additionally, the school has a lower 4-year graduation rate of around 85-89% and a higher dropout rate ranging from 2.4% to 5.5%, both of which are worse than the state averages. The school also has a very high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 25.4% to 45.7% in recent years, significantly higher than the state average.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Vernon Hills High School, Libertyville High School, and Lake Forest High School, which are part of higher-performing districts and serve more affluent student populations, North Chicago Community High School significantly underperforms across various metrics. Despite the high per-student spending at North Chicago Community High School, ranging from $17,880 to $22,237, the school's academic performance remains significantly below the state average, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be enough to address the school's challenges.

Open Quote I graduated from North Chicago Community High School is 2003. I graduated with honors and in the top 10% of my class. North Chicago is a school that had dedicated teachers who would teach/educate you if you wanted to learn. I was able to take CP and AP classes my junior and senior year. I feel that my education in North Chicago has attributed to my success (attained BS with honors and currently working on Masters degree, while working full-time). A student has to be able to separate himself from unproductive peers and seek to be successful. When a student does that the teachers are there to assist him/her without hesitation!! Close Quote
