Summary

Neal Math Science Academy is a public middle school in North Chicago, Illinois, serving 545 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the North Chicago School District 187, which is ranked 729 out of 811 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $15,755 to $20,679 per year, Neal Math Science Academy consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Illinois middle schools, with only 22.3% of students proficient or better in ELA and 9.8% in Math, compared to state averages of 53.1% and 38.5%, respectively. The school also struggles with extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 39.6% over the past few years. These challenges are not unique to the school's overall population, as the performance of student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, English Language Learners, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, are all in the bottom quartile of Illinois middle schools.

When compared to nearby middle schools, the performance gap is stark. For example, Highland Middle School in Libertyville and Lake Bluff Middle School both have significantly higher academic achievement, with 75.5% and 54.9% of students proficient or better in Math, respectively. Addressing the issues of chronic absenteeism and providing equitable educational opportunities for all students will be crucial for improving the academic performance at Neal Math Science Academy.

Open Quote The leadership has no control over the school. The students behave terribly usually without the knowledge of the faculty or the "Security" team.
My son was assaulted and no one knew until I went in to the school and raised hell. What is the point of having a security team on campus if students
get assaulted in the hallways and dont have the confidence in the school leadership to speak up for themselves

My son was assaulted several times in the hallways of this school. Not by a bigger kid hoping to get lunch money. It was a female student just for the sake of bullying.
When notified the student was not punished accordingly, a light slap on the wrist. If this was a school that was not in such a bad area the consequences for those kind ofactions are much more severe. There is no one to teach these students right from wrong.

This school is a shame. It is very close to a navy base so military members that cannot get their children into the charter school have almost no choice but to
try to deal with this place. My son only attended for two months before bullying made me withdraw him. Don't try to tell the staff of their issues. It is clear
that no one at or around this school cares. Not the faculty, not the students, and definitely not the parents Close Quote
