Summary:
Evanston CCSD 65 has three middle schools serving grades 6–8: Haven Middle School, Nichols Middle School and Chute Middle School. In 2025–2026, all three posted proficiency results above state averages in all-grade English language arts (ELA) and math, as well as eighth-grade science. ELA results ranged from 72% to 79%, compared with 56% statewide; math ranged from 50% to 60%, compared with 40% statewide. In science, results ranged from 61% to 75%, while the state result was 52%. The most important takeaway is that every school exceeded state results in each of these reported subjects.
Nichols leads overall in ELA and math, scoring 79% and 60%; those results are 7 and 5 percentage points above the average of the other two schools. Haven leads eighth-grade science at 75%, about 8 points above the other schools’ average. Chute is lowest in math and science: its 50% in math is 10 points below the other schools’ average, and its 61% in science is 13 points below. ELA is a different picture: Chute and Haven are virtually tied at 72.3% and 72.1%, respectively.
Results rose at all three schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026. The three-school average increased by 6 percentage points in ELA, 6 in math and 18 in eighth-grade science, compared with state increases of 3, 1 and 7 points. Chute had the largest math increase, 10 points, while Haven had the largest science increase, 27 points. SchoolDigger gives Nichols the highest statewide ranking of these schools, at the 87th percentile; Haven is at the 83rd and Chute at the 73rd, and each has four stars. For additional context, in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible students were 27% at Haven, 35% at Nichols and 51% at Chute; student-teacher ratios were 11, 9.5 and 10.1, respectively. These figures offer context, but do not by themselves explain differences in school results.
