Black Canyon Middle School in Idaho Falls, ID, serves 810 students in grades 7 and 8 as part of the Bonneville Joint District. The school has shown impressive upward momentum, climbing from the 24th percentile statewide in 2023-24 to the 51st percentile in 2025-26 and earning a 3-star rating. It is now the strongest of the three same-district middle schools in the immediate area, outperforming both Rocky Mountain Middle School and Sandcreek Middle School in math, ELA, and science.

Eighth-grade science is a standout subject, with 46.8% proficiency — well above the state average of 42.9% and nearly double the rate at Rocky Mountain (25.4%). Math (41.6%) and ELA (54.7%) are essentially at state averages. The school runs efficiently with a high student-teacher ratio of 19.9 students per teacher.
