West Junior High is a public middle school in Boise, ID, serving 717 students in grades 7–9 as part of the Boise Independent District. The school currently holds a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, ranking 117th out of 174 Idaho middle schools (33rd percentile), placing it in the lower-middle tier of schools statewide. This marks a decline from earlier years, when West consistently ranked in the 60th–66th percentile with 3-star ratings between 2015 and 2019.

Academically, West trails district and state averages in nearly every subject. Math proficiency is 40.7% (vs. 46.4% district and 43.1% state), and ELA proficiency is 48.5% (vs. 53.3% district and 54.0% state). The most striking concern is a 7th-to-8th grade slump: 7th-grade math proficiency (47.4%) is actually above the state average, but it drops to 34.6% by 8th grade. Eighth-grade science is also weak at 32.2% vs. the district's 43.0%. Students from low-income families face the steepest challenges, ranking near the bottom statewide in recent years. Nearby Lake Hazel Middle School, just 2.4 miles away, serves a similar share of students from low-income families (39.1% vs. 37.4%) yet posts 55.7% math proficiency—15 points higher than West. There are encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 28.0% in 2021–2022 to 15.8%—now better than the Boise Independent District average (22.5%) and close to the state average (13.8%). This turnaround shows the school can change student behavior and may be fueling a modest recovery in West's ranking, which rose from the 23rd percentile in 2024–2025 to the 33rd percentile this year. However, test scores remain mostly flat, so sustained progress will require a sharper focus on 8th-grade instruction and targeted support for the growing number of students from low-income households (now 37.4% of enrollment, up from 27.2% two years ago). For parents, West Junior High is a school in transition—stable, but with meaningful room to improve.
