The Boise Independent District includes 8 middle/junior high schools serving grades 7–9 (plus 6th grade at Les Bois Junior High School), with 5,131 students enrolled and a district ranking of 41st out of 101 Idaho districts. East Junior High School is the clear standout, ranking #21 in the state with the highest proficiency across all subjects and the lowest chronic absenteeism (13.9%). North Junior High School (#25) and Les Bois Junior High School (#29) also earn 4-star ratings. In contrast, Fairmont Junior High School ranks #163 — the district's lowest — with proficiency rates far below state averages, while South Junior High School ranks #135 with 97% of its students qualifying for free/reduced lunch.

The achievement gap within this district is massive: math proficiency ranges from 24.8% at Fairmont to 70.4% at East. The lowest-performing schools also struggle with chronic absenteeism — Fairmont (29.2%) and South (29.0%) both have roughly one in three students chronically absent, and every Boise middle school exceeds the state average of 13.8%. Notably, higher spending does not guarantee better outcomes: Riverglen Junior High School spends the most per student ($11,760) and has the smallest class sizes (13.6:1), yet ranks #116 with math proficiency of just 35.0%. Meanwhile, North Junior High School spends the least ($8,791) yet performs among the best.

Math is the district's most consistent weakness — ELA proficiency outpaces math in nearly every school, with dramatic gaps at Fairmont (37.1% vs 24.8%) and South Junior High School (45.8% vs 34.7%). There are encouraging signs: North Junior High School is the biggest improver, jumping from #51 to #25 over three years with math proficiency rising from 56.3% to 65.3%. However, Fairmont Junior High School is trending sharply downward, falling from #116 to #163 as math proficiency dropped 10 points. Hillside Junior High School and West Junior High sit in the middle, slightly below district averages. For parents, the data points to two priorities: improving attendance and providing targeted math support, especially at Fairmont, South, and Riverglen Junior High School.
