Maui High School

Maui High School is a 9–12 comprehensive high school on 660 S Lono Ave in Kahului, Hawaii, serving 1,725 students — the largest enrollment of any school in its comparison group — as part of the statewide Hawaii Department of Education.

Maui High is the academic anchor of central Maui. In 2025–26 it posted the top English Language Arts proficiency in its neighborhood (53%) and tied for the top math figure (25%), ranking 20th of 65 Hawaii high schools. It has held a 4-star rating for four straight reported years — a consistency no neighboring school matches — though its state percentile has slipped from 81 to 69. The main reason is a roughly 15-point ELA decline from its 68% peak in 2023–24, which has narrowed its lead over King Kekaulike High School to 7 points and over Henry Perrine Baldwin High School to 10; Baldwin sits only 1.66 miles away, spends about $500 more per student, and still trails Maui on every outcome.

School climate is Maui's standout strength: chronic absenteeism is 28%, the lowest in the comparison group and down from 31.3% the year before, while graduation is 84% — mid-pack, and the one place where results trail Lahainaluna High School (87%) despite more favorable conditions. Maui serves the least economically disadvantaged intake of the group (about 35% free or reduced lunch) while spending the least per student of the schools with available figures, and its student–teacher ratio improved to 14.8. The equity picture is the most actionable: outcomes vary widely across student groups, with a 53-point spread between its strongest and weakest reported groups, and some groups declining over the past two years even as low-income students perform well. Kulanihakoi High School, the newest and smallest local school, and Lahainaluna, which has declined sharply, both make Maui's scale and stability look like real advantages.
