Summary

Washington-Wilkes Middle School is a public middle school in Washington, Georgia, serving 299 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Wilkes County School District, which is ranked 124 out of 206 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its location, Washington-Wilkes Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the state average on the Milestones Assessment, with proficiency rates in core subjects significantly lower than the state's. The school's statewide ranking has dropped from 215 out of 559 Georgia middle schools in 2018-2019 to 435 out of 584 in 2024-2025. In contrast, the nearby Lincoln County Middle School, which is part of the higher-ranked Lincoln County School District, consistently outperforms Washington-Wilkes Middle School and the state averages.

The school's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 87.29% to 91.92% in recent years, indicating a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population. While the school's per-student spending and student-teacher ratio have varied, the overall trend of declining academic performance suggests the need for targeted interventions and strategies to address the unique needs of the students and improve their educational outcomes.

Open Quote My child has had to deal with bullying and favoritism the whole time they have attended middle school. The schools' principle does not address the issues and brushes you off or sends you to another person when you bring anything up. They are not honest about what really goes on in the school itself. The board of education is more concerned with how it appears then really educating our children and dealing with real issues. I know several parents that have had to pull their children out of the school system and homeschool them because of these issues. Close Quote
