Summary

Luella Elementary School in Locust Grove, GA, serves 616 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Henry County school district, which currently holds a 2-star rating.

Luella Elementary shows a clear strength in early-grade math. In the most recent school year, 43.7% of 3rd graders were proficient in math—well above the district average of 36.9% and notably higher than nearby schools like Walnut Creek Elementary (26.5%) and Tussahaw Elementary (27.3%). However, the school faces a significant challenge in sustaining that progress. Math proficiency drops sharply to 34.3% in 4th grade and just 20.6% in 5th grade. This decline is steeper than at higher-performing peers like Rocky Creek Elementary, which maintains more consistent scores across grades (56.2% in 3rd, 47.9% in 4th, and 44.4% in 5th). This pattern suggests an opportunity for Luella to focus on vertical alignment and instructional continuity in the upper elementary grades.

On a positive note, Luella has a notably lower chronic absenteeism rate (16.4%) than the district (19.6%) and state (17.7%) averages, and far better than several neighbors like Locust Grove Elementary School (26.7%) and Birch Creek Elementary School (26.1%). The school also shows strong results for its African American students, ranking in the 45th percentile statewide for that subgroup—well above its overall 25th percentile ranking. While Luella's overall state ranking places it in the lower half of Georgia elementary schools, it stands as a relative bright spot among a cluster of nearby schools that generally perform in the bottom 20th percentile. With per-student spending of $14,257—mid-range compared to neighbors—the school's challenges appear less about funding and more about how resources are allocated to support learning in the upper grades.

Open Quote I really like this school. My husband and I both grew up in Christian schools, our son's attended Christian school in Pre-K3 & K4. We were very skeptic on moving our son into public school. To our surprise, it isn't has bad as we thought. Luella has a clean and pleasant environment.

Our son love it, we like it much better than his Pre-K. He's in an advance program which allow him to utilize his knowledge and prepare him for more challenging programs ahead.

My only drawback to this school is dropping my child off in the morning. Traffic direction need some major work. Some of the attendants aren't pleasant when dropping off the kids. We had 1 unpleasant person last year, who's now replaced by another.

Otherwise, this school isn't bad for a public school. Close Quote
