Summary

Lovin Elementary School in Lawrenceville, GA, serves 856 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of Gwinnett County Public Schools, a district ranked in the 67th percentile statewide.

Lovin’s biggest standout is attendance. Only 8.2% of students are chronically absent—far better than the district average of 15.0% and roughly half the rate at nearby Jenkins Elementary (18.6%) or Lawrenceville Elementary (19.2%). This is a remarkable improvement from 15.4% just four years ago, suggesting strong family engagement and a positive school climate. The school also does exceptionally well for its African American students, ranking in the 86th percentile statewide—its strongest subgroup performance. Science has been a consistent strength, with 5th graders outperforming the state in every year of available data, though scores dipped in the most recent year. Lovin also invests more per student ($16,836) than any nearby school and maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.5, lower than most peers.

However, there are challenges. The most persistent is a 5th grade math slump: proficiency has hovered in the 34–40% range for three straight years, well below district averages, while 3rd and 4th grade math scores sit near district norms. This pattern suggests a possible transition or curriculum issue worth asking about. The school’s overall ranking slipped from the 71st percentile (4 stars) last year to the 63rd percentile (3 stars) this year, though it remains in the middle tier among nearby schools—ahead of Jenkins, Winn Holt, Lawrenceville, and Simonton, but behind higher-performing neighbors like Starling Elementary and Trip Elementary. Notably, Lovin serves a higher percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (72%) than those top performers, making its solid attendance and subgroup results particularly meaningful. English Language Arts scores for the current year will be released in December.

Open Quote At the beginning of the school year we loved it here. It was a fantastic school & each of my kids were truly learning. However, I think this school is way too focused on "instruction" & the administration needs to realize that these are still children. Telling children at the age of 7,8,9,10 that they are too old for fun activities such as holiday celebrations like Halloween, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day or still enjoying make believe, playing pretend, or being silly. I have heard multiple parents complain that their children are being forced to grow up too soon here. My children think they are too old for these fun activities & were devastated when they were told these things. I am a strict parent who believes in good education & keeping kids on a good schedule. My children make great grades, but they are still KIDS & still need to have fun growing up. It would be awesome & wonderful if they could lighten up a little. They have a great staff. They must have forgotten what it was like when they grew up & had all the fun in their classrooms. We will be looking into other schools that still have the fun in their hallways, classrooms, and practice both instruction & fun time. Education should be fun and not feel like a prison.
