Summary

East Forsyth High School in Gainesville, GA, serves 1,588 students in grades 9–12 and is part of the highly rated Forsyth County district, which ranks in the 97th percentile statewide.

This school tells a story of contrasts. On one hand, the graduation rate has jumped impressively from 88.9% to 95.1% in a single year—now nearly 8 points above the state average. On the other hand, chronic absenteeism remains a stubborn challenge at 15.2%, which is nearly double the district average of 8.2%. Test scores also show a significant gap compared to district peers. For example, only 33.7% of students are proficient in Algebra I versus a 71.6% district average, and U.S. History proficiency has declined steadily to 28.0%. Biology is a relative bright spot at 53.3% proficiency, which beats the state average. When compared to nearby schools, East Forsyth actually outperforms most Hall County schools—like Flowery Branch High (19.8% Algebra I) and West Hall High School (94.3% graduation rate)—but it trails its own Forsyth County peers, including North Forsyth High School (40.9% Algebra I) and Forsyth Central High School (61.5% Biology).

One area of particular concern is support for English Language Learner students, who rank at the 1st percentile statewide—a signal that these students may need more targeted help. The school also spends slightly less per student ($12,762) than some district counterparts, and its recent drop in state ranking (from the 73rd to 54th percentile) reflects these accumulating challenges. Still, East Forsyth remains above the state median overall, and its strong graduation rate improvement shows the school is capable of meaningful progress. For parents, the key takeaway is that this is a school with solid fundamentals but clear opportunities for growth, especially in math, attendance, and support for diverse learners.

Open Quote This school is a complete joke compared to the other high schools in the county. It seems as if they sent all the teachers that the other schools had issues with to this school. The counselors are completely absent, the rules they impose on students are rules you would give to elementary aged kids, and good luck if there is ever a dangerous situation in the school because there is absolutely no cell service in the entire school!
