Summary

Huntley Hills Elementary School in Chamblee, GA, serves approximately 507 students in grades PK-5 as part of DeKalb County Schools. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the 23rd percentile statewide, a significant drop from the previous year's 43rd percentile ranking.

One of the most pressing concerns for Huntley Hills is chronic absenteeism. At 28.1%, the rate is well above the state average of 17.7% and has been climbing steadily since 2022-2023. This is especially striking when compared to nearby schools like Ashford Park Elementary School (5.5%) and Montgomery Elementary School (6.8%), both of which rank in the 85th percentile or higher. Even Oakcliff Elementary School, which serves a student population with even higher poverty rates, has dramatically lower absenteeism at 8.8% and ranks 17 percentile points higher than Huntley Hills. This suggests that improving attendance could be a key lever for academic improvement.

There are some bright spots worth noting. Huntley Hills' 4th grade math performance (42.4% proficient) actually exceeds the district average, and the school's English Language Learner students rank in the 34th percentile statewide—better than the school's overall ranking. The school also maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.3:1 and spends $21,190 per student, which is higher than several higher-performing nearby schools. However, the school's Hispanic students subgroup ranks in the 6th percentile, and 5th grade science scores have dropped sharply to 20.7% proficiency. While the school faces real challenges, the 4th grade math success and relatively strong ELL supports offer a foundation to build upon as the school works to address absenteeism and replicate what's working across all grade levels.

Open Quote I LOVE this little school. I live in the HH neighborhood, have my masters in education, am a current educator, and my mother is a former Montessori teacher. My daughter is in the Montessori program she is growing and learning a ton every day. The PTA is very active and the community based feel of the school is unparalleled in this day of large public schools. Our Principal, Dr. Ford, is also very supportive of our Montessori program (which only makes a small percentage of the overall school). I can't speak for the traditional side, but would highly recommend the Montessori program! Close Quote

Open Quote I love our school - the staff really cares about the kids! My children are part of the Montessori program and I feel like they are getting a great education. Both of my kids were fully reading in Kindergarten and they have STEM days every month. Not only are they learning the basics, but they are learning how to think about a problem and problem solve - which is important for the rest of their life. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a wonderful school. There is a great sense of community, a very active PTA, growing interest from parents who don't even have children in the school, either yet, or have had past children. What's even greater, under the leadership of the principal, Dr. Ford, the teachers and students have worked passionately and tirelessly to achieve STEM certification - the first in the Chamblee cluster. My now 8th grader went through Huntley Hills and always speaks of HH with fond memories and my Kindergardener is also loving it. Close Quote
