Summary

Dr. George Washington Carver Elementary School in Richmond Hill, GA, serves 658 students in grades 4 and 5 as part of the top-rated Bryan County school district, which ranks 18th out of 201 districts statewide.

Carver Elementary is a consistently strong school, ranking in the 84th percentile of Georgia elementary schools (191st out of 1,219) and earning a 4-star rating. Its most impressive strength is its exceptional support for Hispanic students, where it ranks in the 96th percentile statewide (5 stars), and its strong work with Special Education students, ranking in the 81st percentile (4 stars). The school also boasts remarkably low chronic absenteeism at just 8.9%—less than half the state average of 17.7%—which points to a culture where students show up and stay engaged. With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.1:1, the school provides a focused learning environment for its upper-elementary grade band. While math and science scores remain above state averages, 5th-grade math proficiency dipped slightly from 65.3% to 62.7% and science from 71.5% to 57.7% over the past year—trends worth watching but not alarming given the school's decade-long track record of never ranking below the 80th percentile.

For context, Carver sits within a district that dramatically outperforms its immediate neighbors. Nearby McAllister Elementary School ranks in the 97th percentile, while Frances Meeks Elementary School also ranks in the top 10% statewide. In contrast, schools in the adjacent Savannah-Chatham County district, such as Southwest Elementary School, generally rank in the bottom half. Carver's 48% free/reduced lunch rate is higher than McAllister's 12%, which helps explain some performance differences, but Carver's targeted subgroup successes and consistent attendance make it a model of effective elementary education within an excellent district.

Open Quote The principal and one of the assistant principals at this school are absolutely awful and need to go. They do not care about the safety of your child at all they create a toxic school environment if your child has an iep or 504 you can expect horrible accommodations the classroom teachers that we have had have been amazing however the principal herself needs to be fired at this point she is just awful Close Quote
