Summary

Quitman Elementary School in Quitman, GA, serves approximately 596 students in grades K-5 within the Brooks County district, a rural community where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Quitman Elementary has shown a steady recovery over the past several years. After hitting a low point in 2018-2019, the school has climbed from the 3rd percentile statewide to the 25th percentile in 2025-2026. One of the most encouraging trends is chronic absenteeism, which has dropped dramatically from 33.9% in 2021-2022 to 19.1% in 2025-2026—a sign that more students are showing up ready to learn. In math, 3rd and 4th graders are performing close to district averages, and 5th grade math actually matches the district rate. The school also earns its highest rating—2 stars—for its work with African American students, ranking in the 30th percentile statewide for that subgroup. While science proficiency (29.1% in 5th grade) trails the district by about 14 points, early-grade reading scores have improved significantly, with 3rd grade ELA rising from 10.6% to 26.7% proficiency between 2022-2023 and 2024-2025.

Compared to nearby schools, Quitman faces clear challenges. North Brooks Elementary, in the same district, ranks in the 55th percentile and outperforms Quitman by 32 points in 5th grade science, though both schools serve similar student populations. Schools in Lowndes County, like Hahira Elementary School, post math proficiency rates nearly 47 points higher, but those schools also have lower poverty levels and far lower chronic absenteeism. Quitman spends $14,891 per student—more than some higher-performing schools—which raises questions about resource efficiency. Still, the upward trend in rankings, improving attendance, and gains in early literacy suggest the school's improvement efforts are taking hold, even if progress is gradual.

Open Quote My granddaughter just finished first grade at QES. She cried on the last day because she did not want school to end. Her reading and math skills at the end of first grade are where mine were in third grade. The school provided a two week Math/Science enrichment camp in which she participated. She loved every minute of the camp and among other achievements learned to multiply (typically third grade curriculum). At QES, every child is encouraged to reach their potential but none are compared to others. Close Quote
