Summary

Dewar Elementary in Valdosta, GA, serves approximately 821 students in Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Lowndes County school district, which ranks in the 93rd percentile statewide. The school has earned a 4-star rating in eight of the last ten years and currently ranks 242nd out of 1,219 Georgia elementary schools—a strong rebound from the prior year and a testament to its consistent, resilient performance.

What truly sets Dewar apart is its exceptional work with specific groups of students. The school ranks in the 93rd percentile statewide for Hispanic students and the 90th percentile for Special Education students—placing it in the top 10% of Georgia schools for both groups. It also outperforms its overall ranking with male students (84th percentile), and its 5th graders posted a 66.9% proficiency rate in Science, far exceeding the state average of 44.2%. Perhaps most striking is the school's chronic absenteeism rate of just 8.5%—less than half the state average of 17.7%—which speaks to a strong culture of attendance and family engagement. This advantage is especially clear when compared to nearby Valdosta City schools like Pinevale Elementary (4.45 miles away), where only 3.1% of 5th graders are proficient in math, versus Dewar's 54.1%.

Dewar has also shown remarkable resilience in the face of change. The percentage of students eligible for free or reduced lunch has risen from about 50% to nearly 76% over two years, yet the school's academic performance has held steady or improved. While upper elementary math (4th grade at 53.7% proficiency) and recent ELA results offer areas for growth, the school's efficient spending ($12,132 per student, lower than several lower-performing peers) and improving student-teacher ratio (13.6:1) suggest resources are being used wisely. For parents, Dewar represents a school that delivers strong, equitable results across diverse student populations—a model of sustainable excellence in the region.

Open Quote My child is attending his fourth year at Dewar Elementary (he started in Pre-K 4). We have been extremely pleased with his progress.

His teachers have always been very supportive. They have all been available whenever we needed them.

Accountability is the reason why the school is successful. Everyone, students and teachers are expected to do their part. Mrs. Lind has put high standards in place and everyone works towards attaining those goals. Close Quote
