Summary

Finch Elementary is a PK-5 school in southwest Atlanta serving 291 students within Atlanta Public Schools, where all students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has shown steady improvement over the past decade, climbing from the 2nd percentile statewide in 2015-2016 to the 17th percentile in 2025-2026, and now earns a 1-star rating—a meaningful step up from the 0-star ratings it received for several years.

Finch stands out for its extraordinary investment in students. The school spends $39,281 per student—more than 3.5 times what KIPP Strive Primary Charter School spends ($10,925)—and maintains an exceptionally low student-teacher ratio of 8.2:1, the lowest among nearby schools. This investment appears to be paying off in some areas. Finch's ranking now exceeds several nearby schools, including T. J. Perkerson Elementary School, M. A. Jones Elementary School, and Thomas Heathe Slater Elementary School. The school also shows particular strength in serving its African American students, ranking in the 33rd percentile statewide for that subgroup—significantly better than its overall ranking. Math scores are trending upward, with fifth-grade math jumping from 14.3% to 25.5% proficiency in one year, and fifth-grade science (27.3%) now exceeds math.

However, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism, while improved from 43.7% to 30.5%, still affects nearly one in three students—well above the state average of 17.7%. Despite the high spending, academic proficiency remains below district and state averages in most subjects. For context, Tuskegee Airman Global Academy, located just over a mile away, spends less per student ($31,461) yet achieves a 44th percentile ranking and 46.8% third-grade math proficiency versus Finch's 27.7%. This suggests that while Finch's commitment to small classes and resources is commendable, the connection between spending and outcomes isn't always direct—and there may be room to refine instructional strategies to better translate investment into achievement.

Open Quote MY Child just started Finch Elementary today, but i'm starting to kind of regret my decision sending her there after i saw their ratings, reviews and scores, was not pleased at all! i saw that they were 50% below where they should be, and the ratings and reviews were not good at all. I don't want to judge too soon because the school might just be pretty good but im just gonna wait and see what happens and just stay very involved with the school and if I see the Current ratings and reviews are correct about this School I will be pulling My child out ASAP! But now im just hoping for the best. Close Quote

Open Quote My children has attended Finch Elementary School for two years and over all I would say that they have great teachers. In this particular school parents must get involved, because if you don't then your child will be left behind. The administrators are hard to deal with, however the teachers are great!!! They do not have enough activities to challenge the children learning; furthermore they place the children in groups "inner city children". Close Quote
