Sylvan Hills Middle School in Atlanta's West End serves 452 students in grades 6–8 within Atlanta Public Schools, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has shown meaningful improvement in recent years, climbing from the 16th percentile to the 28th percentile in statewide rankings between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 — its best showing in over a decade.

The most striking strength is advanced coursework. In 2025–2026, 90.9% of students scored proficient or above in Algebra I — more than double the district rate (41.7%) and nearly double the state rate (48.1%). This continues a pattern of strong results, with 100% proficiency in 2023–2024 and 75% in 2022–2023. Nearby Kipp Strive Charter School, just 2 miles away with a similar demographic profile, achieves dramatically better grade-level results while keeping absenteeism at just 15.7%. Sylvan Hills spends $28,589 per student — higher than KIPP Strive's $22,282 — yet trails in most grade-level metrics. The good news: 2025–2026 brought across-the-board gains in nearly every subject, including a 22-point jump in Algebra I and a 10-point rise in 8th grade social studies. With declining absenteeism and improving scores, the school appears to be building momentum, though closing the grade-level achievement gap remains a substantial work in progress.
