Summary

Odyssey Charter School is a K-8 charter school in Newnan, GA, serving 359 students as part of the State Specialty Schools I- Odyssey Charter School district, offering families a unique alternative to the traditional elementary-only schools in the surrounding Coweta County district.

This school stands out for its dramatic differences in performance by grade level. Middle school is a clear strength: 8th graders scored 45% proficient in science (well above the 29.7% state average) and 50% in social studies (versus 40.2% statewide). Seventh grade math also jumped impressively to 57.9% proficiency, surpassing the state average of 42%. However, 5th grade math has been a persistent challenge, with only 17.6% of students proficient this year—a 26.5-point gap from the state average. This pattern has held for four straight years, suggesting a transition issue that the school may want to investigate. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism is remarkably low at 10.7%, about half the state average, indicating strong family engagement and a positive school climate.

Compared to nearby schools, Odyssey holds a middle-to-lower position. Its 32nd percentile ranking places it below highly rated neighbors like Arbor Springs Elementary (96th percentile) and Thomas Crossroads Elementary (93rd percentile), but above Jefferson Parkway Elementary (19th percentile). The school spends a substantial $21,937 per student—roughly 50-70% more than most local elementaries like Welch Elementary ($12,619) or White Oak Elementary ($13,176)—and maintains a favorable 10.4:1 student-teacher ratio. While this investment hasn't yet produced consistent results across all grades, the dramatic one-year improvement in 7th grade math shows the school's capacity for significant gains. For parents, this is a school with clear middle-school strengths, a caring environment, and resources that could help address the elementary-grade challenges ahead.

Open Quote I will not have my children attend after this year. Test scores are below state average and dropping. There does not seem to be any discipline. It appears the principal has no idea what he is doing. Staff seem afraid of him. Very disturbing atmosphere. Close Quote
