Summary

Berta Weathersbee Elementary School in LaGrange, GA, serves 252 students in grades PK–5 as part of the Troup County school district, and it is in the midst of a remarkable academic turnaround.

After years of ranking near the bottom of Georgia elementary schools, Berta Weathersbee jumped from the 22nd percentile statewide in 2024–2025 to the 42nd percentile in 2025–2026—its best ranking in at least a decade. The most dramatic success story is in 5th grade Science, where 58.2% of students scored proficient or above, beating the district average by 16.5 points and the state average by 14 points. This is a stunning improvement from just two years earlier, when only 15.2% of 5th graders were proficient in Science. The school also stands out for its investment in students: it spends $19,505 per student—roughly $5,700 more than the district peer average—and maintains a low student-teacher ratio of 10.6:1, the lowest among comparable schools. This investment appears to be paying off, as the school's state percentile has climbed from 11th to 42nd since spending increased by 28% in 2021–2022.

Compared to nearby schools, Berta Weathersbee now outranks Clearview Elementary School (6th percentile) and Ethel W. Kight Elementary School (52nd percentile), despite serving a similarly high-poverty population. However, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism is 22.7%—the highest in the district and well above the state average—though it has improved from 30% two years ago. Additionally, 3rd grade math proficiency is critically low at 11.7%, a full 30 points below district and state averages. The school's upward trend, particularly in Science and for its African American students (who rank in the 57th percentile statewide), suggests recent investments in smaller classes and additional support are making a real difference, but sustaining this momentum will require continued focus on attendance and early-grade math.

Open Quote Our family was new to the area for the school year of 09-10 and have to say that I was not happy when my children were drafted to Berta Weathersbee. After one year in the school, I am very happy with the principal, teachers. Mrs. Whitley was a great 2nd grade teacher. My son has also enjoyed 5th grade with Mrs. Buchanan. They have several programs at the school which my children participated in. Chorus was fabulous and loved their performance. My child also participated in a school play. They teach kids great qualities. The teachers in 5th grade worked hard so that the kids learned their skills and were able to pass the CRCT. My son passed the CRCT!! This was a smaller school so our children got more attention which always helps!! Close Quote
