Middle Schools in Forsyth County

Forsyth County is home to 11 middle schools serving grades 6-8, a high-performing suburban district north of Atlanta that ranks in the top 5% of Georgia districts with a 5-star rating. The county's middle schools are led by South Forsyth Middle School (ranked #14 statewide) and Riverwatch Middle School (#16), both of which post exceptional math scores—South Forsyth exceeds 87% proficiency in every grade level, while Riverwatch leads the county with 99% Algebra I proficiency and 90.9% 8th-grade math proficiency. Piney Grove Middle School (#27) and Lakeside Middle School (#43) round out the top tier, with Lakeside showing notable year-over-year improvement in 6th-grade math (72.5% to 81%) and perfect 100% Algebra I scores.

At the other end of the spectrum, Little Mill Middle School ranks lowest in the county at #261 statewide, with math proficiency rates 20-30 points below district averages (41-48% across grades). Otwell Middle School (#180) and North Forsyth Middle School (#161) also struggle relative to their peers. Notably, Otwell spends the most per student ($14,462) and has the lowest student-teacher ratio (14.1), yet ranks in the bottom third—demonstrating that resources alone don't drive results. Chronic absenteeism is a key differentiator: North Forsyth's rate (17%) matches the state average and is more than double the district's 8.2%, while top performers like Riverwatch (4.0%) and South Forsyth (4.6%) keep absenteeism below 5%.

Every county middle school exceeds the district average in Algebra I proficiency (83-100%), even lower-performing schools like Little Mill (96.1%), suggesting these scores reflect a self-selected advanced cohort rather than overall school performance. The district's physical science scores (61.9% average) are only marginally above the state (60.9%), a much narrower gap than the 25-33 point leads seen in math. The county effectively splits into two tiers: seven schools rank in the top 100 statewide, while four fall below #130, with the divide closely tracking free/reduced lunch rates—from 7.88% at South Forsyth to 46.05% at Otwell.
