Summary:

Clayton County is home to 15 middle schools serving grades 6-8, all of which operate in a high-poverty context where nearly every student qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The district as a whole ranks in the bottom fifth of Georgia school systems, but the schools vary widely in performance, with a few standout institutions proving that success is possible even under challenging circumstances.

M. D. Roberts Middle School is the clear leader in the district, ranking 343rd in the state with a 2-star rating. It posts the lowest chronic absenteeism rate in Clayton County at just 8.5%—far below the district average of 28%—and its math, science, and social studies scores are the best in the area, often doubling the district average. Rex Mill Middle School and Babb Middle School also stand out, with both achieving 100% proficiency in Algebra I and Rex Mill posting a 78.6% proficiency rate in high school Physical Science, well above the state average. On the other end, Forest Park Middle School ranks last in the district at 543rd, with math proficiency stuck in the low teens and social studies at just 8.9%. Jonesboro Middle School also struggles, particularly in social studies (7.8%) and 8th grade math (16.2%).

Several schools are showing real momentum. Adamson Middle School jumped 54 spots in the state rankings, and Riverdale Middle School improved by 46 positions. Advanced coursework is a district-wide bright spot—students in Algebra I and Physical Science consistently outperform state averages, suggesting that expanding access to these classes could benefit more students. Chronic absenteeism remains the biggest challenge, with ten schools exceeding 20% and Jonesboro topping out at 36%. Notably, higher per-student spending does not guarantee better results: Utopian Academy for the Arts Middle School spends the most ($19,019 per student) but ranks in the bottom half, while M.D. Roberts spends near the median and achieves the best outcomes. For parents, the takeaway is clear: attendance and school culture may matter more than funding, and the district's top schools prove that strong results are attainable.
