Summary

Hudson Academy in Hudson, FL, is a public school serving 920 students in grades 4 through 8 as part of the Pasco County school district, and it faces significant challenges related to high poverty and chronic absenteeism.

One of the most critical issues at Hudson Academy is its exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate, which reached 40% in the 2023-2024 school year. This is more than double the rate at nearby high-performing schools like Charles S. Rushe Middle School (16.9%) and Seven Springs Middle School (20.8%). This absenteeism is strongly linked to the school's consistently low academic proficiency across most subjects and grade levels, with scores well below both district and state averages. For example, in 8th grade math, only 45% of students were proficient, compared to 66% in the district and 61% statewide. The school has a 1-star rating and ranks in the bottom 21% of Florida middle schools.

Despite these struggles, there are notable bright spots. Hudson Academy's advanced math program is highly effective, with students scoring exceptionally well on Algebra 1 (77% proficient) and Geometry (100% proficient) End-of-Course exams—far above district and state averages. Additionally, the school's Civics EOC score (78%) is slightly above the state average (77%). It is important to note that Hudson Academy is not alone in its challenges; it is part of a cluster of low-performing schools in western Pasco County, including Bayonet Point Middle School and Chasco Middle School, all of which share high poverty rates and absenteeism. The school's per-student spending ($10,439) is actually higher than that of higher-performing peers, suggesting that funding alone is not the solution and that targeted efforts to improve attendance and support the general student population are needed.

Open Quote i wish i could give it 0 the teachers don't know what they are doing and the kids are out of control. I'm having so much difficulties learning and i got guilt tripped by the councilor for having anxiety. Not to mention everytime i eat the food i get sick there was also a hair in it once!!
