Summary

Chasco Middle School in Port Richey, FL, serves 622 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pasco district, with a high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The most critical challenge facing Chasco is an extraordinarily high rate of chronic absenteeism, which has hovered around 48% in recent years—nearly double the district average and significantly higher than nearby schools like Seven Springs Middle School (20.8%) and Charles S. Rushe Middle School (16.9%). This attendance crisis is strongly linked to the school's academic struggles, as proficiency rates in core subjects are consistently among the lowest in the area. For example, only 15% of 7th graders were proficient in math, compared to 53% statewide, and just 21% of 8th graders were proficient in science. Despite higher per-student spending than many high-performing schools in the region, these non-academic barriers have prevented meaningful academic progress.

Interestingly, there is a bright spot: students who take Algebra 1 at Chasco perform exceptionally well, with proficiency rates of 79% in 2023-2024, far exceeding district and state averages. This suggests that the school's accelerated math program is strong, even as the general student body struggles. However, the school's state ranking has been in steady decline for nearly a decade, falling from the 40th percentile to the 14th percentile. Just 5.86 miles away, Seven Springs Middle School serves a much lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students and ranks in the 72nd percentile, highlighting how deeply socioeconomic factors and attendance are tied to school performance within the same district.

Open Quote I used to be a student at this school from 6th-8th and this is by far the worst school I've ever experienced from the students to the teachers, the overall teaching system, and overall quality of the school. Please be careful if you choose to enroll your child at this school. It's honestly a crime filled school and no one does anything about it. Children and parents are forced to keep quiet.
