Summary

Hudson High School in Hudson, FL, serves 1,497 students in grades 6 through 12 and is part of the Pasco district, a mid-sized school in a community where nearly half of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The most striking feature of Hudson High is its paradox: a phenomenal 99.7% graduation rate, far exceeding the state average, yet academic proficiency in core subjects like Algebra 1 (28%) and 10th-grade ELA (47%) lags well behind state averages. This gap is a key differentiator from nearby schools like Angeline Academy Of Innovation, which boasts 87% ELA proficiency and a 97% graduation rate, or Wendell Krinn Technical High School with 75% ELA proficiency and a 100% graduation rate. A major factor is chronic absenteeism: 40.5% of Hudson students are chronically absent, dramatically higher than the district average of 29.2% and far above Angeline Academy's 11.0% or Wendell Krinn's 20.9%. This disengagement is likely a primary driver of low test scores, even as the school appears effective at ensuring students complete graduation requirements.

On a positive note, the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced lunch has declined from 66% in 2022-2023 to 48.3% in 2024-2025, suggesting a shifting demographic that could support future improvement. There are also slight upward trends in some test scores, such as Biology 1 proficiency rising from 53% to 64% over the same period. However, Hudson remains a low-performing school compared to peers like River Ridge High School, which meets or exceeds state averages in subjects like Geometry (60% vs. Hudson's 40%). The school's per-student spending ($9,827) is comparable to others in the area, indicating that challenges are more about addressing attendance and engagement than funding. For parents, the key takeaway is that while Hudson excels at graduating students, it struggles to ensure they are proficient in core academics, making it essential to investigate how the school supports student learning and attendance.

Open Quote This school doesnt help children very well at all with children that have learning disabilities. My daughter is a freshman and wants to leave there so bad, plus if you are in the small minority things get really hard for you there. No wonder the school is going down hill. Close Quote
