Summary

Bayonet Point Middle School in New Port Richey, FL, is a public school serving 668 students in grades 6-8 within the Pasco district, where 62.72% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, reflecting a high-poverty community. The school faces significant challenges, with a state ranking in the bottom 16% of Florida middle schools and proficiency rates in core subjects like 6th grade ELA (46%) and 7th grade math (22%) that are far below district and state averages. For example, nearby Charles S. Rushe Middle School achieves 72% proficiency in 7th grade ELA, highlighting a stark performance gap.

A critical issue is chronic absenteeism, which affects 41.5% of students—nearly double the rate at Seven Springs Middle School (20.8%) and significantly higher than the state average (31.4%). This attendance crisis is a primary driver of low academic outcomes, despite the school spending $10,139 per student, more than higher-performing peers like Seven Springs ($8,602). Interestingly, Bayonet Point excels in advanced coursework: 88% of students in Algebra 1 and 84% in Civics End-of-Course exams are proficient, outperforming district and state averages. This creates a "school within a school," where advanced students thrive while the majority struggle.

Compared to similar nearby schools, Bayonet Point shares challenges with Hudson Academy (65.54% free/reduced lunch, 40% chronic absenteeism) and Gulf Middle School (50.5% chronic absenteeism), though Bayonet Point outperforms Gulf in some subjects like 8th grade science (34% vs. 46%). A district-wide slump in 7th grade math proficiency (22% at Bayonet Point vs. 38% district average) suggests a curriculum gap. To improve, the school must address its attendance crisis and extend the success of its advanced programs to more students.

Open Quote My 13 year old son is a Bayonet point middle student in Pasco. He has been home schooled his entire life and wanted to try public school this year, needless to say he wishes he hadn't. At the beginning of the year his teacher said that his laugh was creepy. Months later, after he was punched in the face by one boy and shoved, pinched, and flicked by 2 of the boys friends on the bus, he came home and broke down, saying everyone hates him even the teachers and that a group of kids are calling him names. As it turned out, the same teacher that said his laugh was creepy, was allowing 6 students from her class to call him creepy on a daily basis. The name calling continued on in his other classes with these same students, one of the children was taking his ice pack and slaming it on his hands during the lunch period. I went to the school and spoke to the guidence councelor, all his teachers and the principal. The teacher denied having knowledge of any name calling or bullying. The only outcome was for my son to have all of his classes changed and his lunch seat moved. We have since had several more problems with other students, the same teacher and another member of staff. Of course the principal does nothing, exept raise his voice at me and tell me that my son is probobly making up problems with this teacher and these students to cover up something HE is doing wrong. My son has been called a faggot, a princess, creepy, physically assulted on more than one occasion, excuded from group projects; and the solution from the principal is always, I will have a talk with them about it, and that is the last I ever hear about it. You would think people that work with children would have a love for them and a want to help them be successful in life, BUTT the truth is they are just there for the PAYCHECK like a fastfood worker.
