Summary

Mater Brighton Lakes is a K-8 charter school in Kissimmee, FL, serving 1,267 students within the Osceola school district, where a large majority of families (83.58%) qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school is a study in contrasts, with a standout advanced math program that far exceeds expectations. In the most recent school year, 89% of students were proficient in Algebra 1 and 100% in Geometry—dramatically outperforming the district (55% and 49%) and state (63% and 56%). This is especially impressive when compared to nearby Bellalago Charter Academy, which has a much lower poverty rate but still trails in these subjects (80% and 96%). However, the school faces a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with 45.9% of students missing too many days—the highest rate among all nearby schools and nearly double that of Bellalago (23.7%). This likely contributes to inconsistent performance in early grades, where 4th grade math (42%) and ELA (45%) fall below district averages.

On a positive note, Mater Brighton Lakes is on a clear upward trend, climbing from the 22nd percentile statewide to the 35th percentile over three years. Upper grades show strength, with 8th grade math (68%) and ELA (61%) beating district averages. Yet, a critical gap remains: only 25% of 8th graders are proficient in science, compared to 44% in the district and 52% statewide. For parents, this school offers a remarkable advanced math program and improving overall scores, but the high absenteeism and weak science scores are important factors to consider.

Open Quote This school is absolutely awful. They rely on devices to teach the kids because the teachers are mostly unqualified. The administration is only concerned with money, not the students. I want to find one good thing, and I just can't. Close Quote
