Summary

Chain Of Lakes Middle in Orlando, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving approximately 955 students in grades 6-8, located in the Orange district. While the school is situated in a relatively affluent area near Windermere and Dr. Phillips, it serves a distinct demographic pocket with 42% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and its academic performance has declined significantly over the past decade, dropping from the 40th percentile to the 16th percentile (1 star) by 2025-2026.

The most critical issue at Chain Of Lakes is chronic absenteeism, with 43.2% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024—a rate 6 percentage points higher than nearby Southwest Middle and 8 points higher than high-performing Horizon West Middle. This absenteeism is a strong predictor of the school's severe underperformance in core academics: 6th grade math proficiency is just 33% (vs. 60% district/state), and 8th grade ELA is 41% (vs. 59% district). The school also has the highest student-to-teacher ratio among its peers at 22.2:1, compared to 17.8:1 at Memorial Middle and 16.8:1 at Carver Middle, making personalized instruction more challenging.

Interestingly, Chain Of Lakes shows a stark "two-tiered" academic system: its advanced courses excel, with 75% proficiency in Algebra 1 and 100% in Geometry, both above district averages, while standard classes lag far behind. This suggests top-tier students are well-served, but the majority are being left behind. The school's spending of $9,867 per student is comparable to Horizon West Middle ($9,499), indicating funding is not the root cause—attendance and instructional effectiveness are key. A glimmer of hope exists in 7th grade ELA, where 49% proficiency is the school's highest recent score, though civics (57%) and 8th grade science (41%) remain red flags, with gaps of 18 and 16 points below the district, respectively.

Open Quote It has pretty good teachers, and the deans are pretty nice there are also some teachers you just dont wanna mess with because their either strict or just straight up annoying, I overall think its a good school but the higher grades like 8th usually talk bout you in your face like you some kind of idiot but if your going there next year just choose who you hang out with wisely because it might just affect you for the rest of the year and also try not to get posted on the school pages (such as colms sleep, munchies, ugly, shaderoom, etc) Close Quote

Open Quote Molded portables made my kids and their teacher sick. You can see the mold on the outside of the portables. They were damaged by the rising flood waters from the lake during various hurricanes between 2012-2020. They removed some, but not all. They smell like mildew and cat pee. My kid said they pulled dead cats & rats out of a couple of them, but put my kid right back in there to get breathing problems. The teachers get so sick they have to quit. Close Quote
