Summary

Turner-Bartels K-8 School in Tampa, FL, is a large public school serving 1,317 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade within the Hillsborough County School District, offering a unique K-8 pathway that sets it apart from most nearby schools, which are K-5 elementary schools.

One of the school's standout strengths is its exceptional advanced math program. Students taking Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course exams achieve proficiency rates of 89% and 100%, respectively—far exceeding district and state averages. This is a major advantage, as no nearby K-5 school offers these high school-level courses. However, the school faces a significant challenge in 7th-grade math, where proficiency has been critically low at just 18% for the past three years, compared to a state average of 53%. This "7th-grade math cliff" is a key area of concern. Additionally, while the school's chronic absenteeism rate (27.2%) is better than the district average, it is notably higher than top-performing neighbors like Chiles Elementary (17.3%) and Pride Elementary (19.6%).

When comparing elementary grades alone, Turner-Bartels is outperformed by several nearby K-5 schools. For example, in 5th-grade math, Turner-Bartels scores 63% proficient, while Pride Elementary (87%) and Clark Elementary (87%) score significantly higher. This suggests that for families prioritizing a top-tier elementary experience, these K-5 schools may be more attractive. Turner-Bartels' primary competitive edge is its K-8 continuity and advanced math offerings for 8th graders. The school's per-student spending ($11,797) is mid-range compared to neighbors, indicating that financial resources alone don't drive outcomes. Overall, Turner-Bartels is a solid mid-tier school with unique strengths in advanced math, but it must address its 7th-grade math gap and attendance issues to improve its standing.

Open Quote TBK8 is a great school but had a lot of turmoil due to the Hillsborough County Board of Education. In 2014-2015, the Board made a decision to combine our Elementary and Middle School into a large public school K8 without working with the parents or our business partners (or School Administrators). They also made an unilateral decision to remove both School Principals and Assistant Principals leaving no one behind to assist with the massive changeover. In addition, the state was in the process of implementing new testing standards (the FSA). Since the K8 combination, our PTSA and community has worked very hard to make the best of our situation and develop a great school system! However, we continue to struggle with the Hillsborough County Board of Education on issues such as constant changes with administration, bell schedules, and bus issues. Since my daughter started elementary school, she is under her 3rd Principal and 3rd bell schedule (start/release time) and she is only going into 4th grade in the fall of 2017. I fear what might happen by the time she hits 8th grade. While this may not sound like a big deal to some, we go through a huge changeover in teaching staff and protocols/education theories. My son's 3rd grade teacher has moved to 4th his 4th grade teacher to 5th his kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade teachers have left TBK8 to teach elsewhere. We lost many great teachers, gained many new teachers .....etc. It is very easy to see by rankings and scores when we have these major changeovers because our children are impacted as is their learning. I personally like the K8 model and feel much better about my son continuing his education in the same location next year as a Middle Schooler. I just wish our County Board could figure a few things out. We have severe bus shortages and issues but they still use buses to bring kids from other neighborhoods to a local High School (as far North in the County as you can get without leaving it). I don't understand this principle. Close Quote
