Summary

Denham Oaks Elementary School in Lutz, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 738 students in grades PK-5 within the Pasco district, offering a solid, cost-effective education in a community with moderate economic diversity (31.44% free/reduced lunch rate).

Denham Oaks consistently earns a 3-star rating, but its state ranking has been slowly declining, from the 67th percentile in 2018-2019 to a projected 51st percentile for 2025-2026. This contrasts with nearby schools like Chiles Elementary School and Seven Oaks Elementary School, which have maintained higher rankings. A key differentiator is spending: Denham Oaks spends about $9,893 per student, the lowest among comparable area schools, while neighbors like Pine View Elementary School ($12,786) and Maniscalco K-8 School ($13,515) invest significantly more. The school also has a chronic absenteeism rate of 18.6%, which is better than the Pasco district average (29.2%) but higher than top performers like Seven Oaks (12.2%) and Lutz Preparatory School (8.4%).

Academically, Denham Oaks shows relative strength in Math, with 3rd and 4th-grade scores (69% and 68%) above district and state averages, while English Language Arts (ELA) scores (55%-61%) lag behind. A standout is its 6th-grade Math program, which achieved a perfect 100% proficiency rate in recent years, likely due to a small group of advanced students. The school’s improving socioeconomic demographics—free/reduced lunch rates dropping from 45.93% to 31.44%—are a positive sign. While Denham Oaks is a reliable option within Pasco, it faces stiff competition from higher-performing Hillsborough schools like Lutz Preparatory School (97th percentile), making it a solid choice for families prioritizing value and consistency over top-tier rankings.

Open Quote I find it disturbing that your school ratings are based solely on standardized test scores (which research has proven are not an accurate measurement of learning gains), and don't take into consideration anything else about a school. There are so many things that are far more important and better indicators of school quality than standardized test scores.

I think Denham Oaks is a great school, and the kids there learn a lot. If there is anything wrong with the school, it is not their fault. It's the fault of the district, and to a greater extent the state, whose policies are making it difficult for all teachers to teach and all students to learn. Close Quote
