Wiregrass Elementary School

Summary:

Wiregrass Elementary School is a public elementary school in Wesley Chapel, Florida, serving 964 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Pasco District, which is ranked 42 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wiregrass Elementary consistently outperforms the Pasco District and the state of Florida in academic proficiency, with 70% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA compared to 53% in Pasco and 55% statewide, and 57% proficient in math compared to 52% in Pasco and 60% statewide. The school also has a more diverse student population, with higher percentages of Asian (13.8%) and Hispanic (27.39%) students than surrounding schools. However, Wiregrass has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 6.5% in 2019-2020 to 18.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average and nearby schools.

While Wiregrass outperforms nearby public schools like New River Elementary and Double Branch Elementary, the nearby charter schools, Pinecrest Academy Wesley Chapel and Union Park Charter Academy, also demonstrate strong academic performance. The higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio at Wiregrass may contribute to its success, but the school's rising chronic absenteeism rates are a concern that should be addressed.

Open Quote To add this school does not have homework. Which is a great thing since now we have more time for extra curricular activities and family time. School lets out close to 4pm. Close Quote

Open Quote I agree with a previous parent - I'm not sure what the teachers here actually do, it certainly doesn't seem to be teaching. I have two kids in school here (and I'm hoping more than anything they get into a school choice slot elsewhere!), neither one brings home any homework to do. Communication is very poor with most people at the school. Continually asking for "fundraising" donations and classroom "donation" of items, this school should give me money to pay for the tutors my kids will need in order to be ready for higher grades!! Open Quote No homework even for kids in higher grades. Teachers don't teach anything, relying on videos created by someone outside school. This place is not a school, but a daycare. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
