Summary

Wiregrass Elementary School is a large, traditional public school in Wesley Chapel, FL, serving 957 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Pasco County School District. This school is a true English Language Arts (ELA) powerhouse, with proficiency rates in reading that consistently outpace district and state averages by 10 to 20 percentage points—for example, 77% of 3rd graders were proficient in the most recent school year. However, parents should be aware of a notable weakness: 5th-grade math, where only 51% of students were proficient, falling below both the district and state averages. This creates a clear "weak spot" in an otherwise strong academic profile.

Wiregrass stands out for its extremely low chronic absenteeism rate of 18.4%, which is significantly better than the district (29.2%) and state (31.4%) averages, signaling strong student engagement and family involvement. A unique data point is that 100% of a select group of advanced 5th graders taking a 6th-grade math course achieved proficiency, far exceeding the district (58%) and state (60%) averages. Compared to nearby schools, Wiregrass is a solid choice, but it faces stiff competition from high-performing charters like Pinecrest Academy Wesley Chapel (81st percentile), which outperforms Wiregrass in nearly every subject. The nearby Seven Oaks Elementary School (76th percentile) has a similar demographic profile but has been more consistent, maintaining a 4-star rating for three consecutive years while Wiregrass has declined.

Historically, Wiregrass was a 4-star school (82nd percentile) in 2018-2019, but it has since dropped to a 3-star rating (62nd percentile), a decline more pronounced than some peers. For families living near the county border, schools in the Hillsborough district, such as Pride Elementary School (94th percentile), are generally outperforming Pasco schools in this area. Overall, Wiregrass is a strong school for families prioritizing literacy, but parents should monitor the math weakness and consider the competitive landscape of nearby charters and Hillsborough County schools.

Open Quote To add this school does not have homework. Which is a great thing since now we have more time for extra curricular activities and family time. School lets out close to 4pm. Close Quote

Open Quote I agree with a previous parent - I'm not sure what the teachers here actually do, it certainly doesn't seem to be teaching. I have two kids in school here (and I'm hoping more than anything they get into a school choice slot elsewhere!), neither one brings home any homework to do. Communication is very poor with most people at the school. Continually asking for "fundraising" donations and classroom "donation" of items, this school should give me money to pay for the tutors my kids will need in order to be ready for higher grades!! Open Quote No homework even for kids in higher grades. Teachers don't teach anything, relying on videos created by someone outside school. This place is not a school, but a daycare. Close Quote
