Summary

Bayview Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in Jacksonville, FL, serving 367 students within the Duval County School District, where 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school has faced significant challenges, including a chronic absenteeism rate of 56.2% in 2023-2024—nearly double the state average—which is a primary factor driving its low academic performance. While Bayview has shown some recent improvement, climbing from the 13th percentile to the 52nd percentile in 2023-2024, its performance has been volatile, dropping back to the 17th percentile in the most recent data. This inconsistency is a key concern for parents to consider.

Bayview stands out for its exceptionally high spending per student at $15,372, which is 65% more than the high-performing John Stockton Elementary School ($9,295) and 61% more than Fishweir Elementary School ($9,536). Despite this investment, Bayview’s academic outcomes remain low, suggesting funds are directed toward addressing non-academic challenges like absenteeism. In contrast, nearby schools like Cedar Hills Elementary (25th percentile) and Timucuan Elementary (16th percentile) have similar performance levels but lower spending. Bayview’s chronic absenteeism rate is comparable to other struggling schools in the area, such as Hyde Park Elementary (53.3%) and Wayman Academy Of The Arts (1st percentile), while high-performing neighbors like John Stockton (12.9%) and Fishweir (22.0%) have much lower rates.

A bright spot is Bayview’s 5th-grade Science performance, where 64% of students were proficient in the latest year, exceeding both the district (56%) and state (60%) averages—a consistent strength for three years. However, this contrasts sharply with English Language Arts (44% proficient) and Math (43% proficient), which are well below state averages. This disparity may reflect a strong Science curriculum or a motivated cohort of older students. For parents, Bayview’s future success hinges on stabilizing attendance and translating its high spending into consistent gains in reading and math, similar to the approach of its high-performing neighbor, John Stockton Elementary.

Open Quote Excellent school! My niece went to 2 other choice schools in Duval county the two years prior and had terrible experiences. She was bullied severely and started failing and got to a point she begged to stay home every day. At this school she made tons of friends and started to excel! She passed with flying colors and was actually excited to see her friends at school! She won't be attending this year and is really sad to go. Close Quote

Open Quote My kids have been in this school since 2011. The staff there are very friendly. The principal Mrs. Neal is an amazing person that likes to be involved with the school and its activities. My childrens teachers Mrs. Shultz and Mrs. Garceau are amazing people. I love this school and the staff and am very pleased with how dedicated they are to making sure that your child gets the right education. Close Quote
