Summary

Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School is a public middle school in Miami Beach, FL, serving 893 students in grades 6-8 within the Miami-Dade County Public School District, and it stands out as a school of contrasts with a moderate economic diversity level (34.7% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch).

The most striking feature of Nautilus is its "tale of two curriculums." The school excels in advanced coursework, achieving exceptional proficiency rates of 90% in Biology, 86% in Geometry, and 80% in Civics on End-of-Course exams—scores that rival top-performing nearby schools like Mater Brickell Academy Middle and Mater Biscayne Academy North Miami Middle School. However, it struggles significantly in grade-level math, with only 42% of 7th graders and 45% of 8th graders proficient, which is dramatically lower than the district average of 58% and 65%, respectively. This gap suggests the school is highly effective at accelerating top-tier students but may be falling short in core math instruction for the general student body, a challenge possibly exacerbated by its high student-to-teacher ratio of 25.5:1 and lower per-student spending of $9,289.

Compared to nearby schools, Nautilus is a relatively stable and affluent "island," with a free/reduced lunch rate of 34.7%—the second lowest in its comparison group, where other schools like Georgia Jones Ayers Middle School and Jose De Diego Middle School have rates exceeding 54% and chronic absenteeism over 40%. Nautilus's chronic absenteeism rate of around 29-30% is moderate and in line with the district average, not as severe as in neighboring high-poverty schools. Despite its strong advanced course performance, the school's overall state ranking has stagnated in the 41st-58th percentile over the past decade, likely because the state's methodology heavily weights grade-level assessments, where math struggles drag down the overall score. This makes Nautilus a school with significant potential for improvement by focusing on closing the math achievement gap.

Open Quote I agree with the earlier comment that this school is working very hard to be a great school. There are some awesome teachers, dedicated counselors and hands-on administrators that are committed to making it a model middle school. There is a dynamic PTSA with great parent involvement that is working with teachers and administrators. My children are in 6th grade and love it. Close Quote
