Summary

Keystone Heights Elementary in Keystone Heights, FL, serves 779 students in grades PK-6 and is part of the highly-rated Clay district, though the school itself has seen a concerning decline in its state ranking over the past five years, dropping from a 4-star to a 2-star rating.

The most pressing issue at Keystone Heights Elementary is a significant "5th grade slump." While 6th graders are thriving—scoring 72% proficient in ELA and 66% in Math, both above state averages—5th graders are struggling, with only 41% proficiency in ELA and 42% in Math. This pattern has persisted for three years, suggesting a systemic problem at that grade level rather than a one-time issue. Nearby schools like Melrose Elementary (in the Putnam district) and McRae Elementary (also in Clay) are outperforming Keystone Heights in most subjects, despite serving similar or higher poverty rates. Chronic absenteeism is also a persistent challenge, with a rate of 31% in 2023-2024, nearly matching the state average and likely contributing to the academic decline.

On a positive note, the school has a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 13:1 and spends $11,457 per student, which is in line with peers like Starke Elementary and Bradford Elementary. This suggests that resources and class sizes are not the primary issue. The strong 6th-grade performance shows the school has the capacity for high achievement, and understanding what works at that level could provide a blueprint for improvement. For parents, the key takeaway is that Keystone Heights Elementary has bright spots but needs urgent attention to address its 5th-grade challenges and attendance issues to reverse its downward trend.

Open Quote Keystone Heights is the best elementary school around. My child went to school there from K to sixth grade and loved it! Like any school or any profession, you will have your share of problems like educators who should find another career. Almost all of my child's teachers were truly devoted and it showed. The best year had to be fourth grade. My child loved going to school every day and I could not have been more pleased. I do wish the principal was more supportive and visible, but the teachers definitely make up for her lack of involvement. Close Quote

Open Quote My neice attended K there last year and I thought she did very well. The school seems to take education and saftey very important. MY only concern is that I have heard the students do not attend Art class becasue of budget cuts. I beleive this wrong and my daughter loves art and do not want that not nurture. As a parent of a futur student I would like to see this changed. Close Quote
