Summary

Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High serves 1,139 students in grades 7 through 12 in the rural community of Keystone Heights, Florida, and is part of the highly-rated Clay district (ranked 17th in Florida). The school has earned a 3-star state rating in recent years, with a notable peak of 4 stars in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, and currently ranks in the 60th percentile among Florida high schools.

The school's most pressing challenge is chronic absenteeism, with 39.2% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024—significantly worse than the district average of 26.7% and the state average of 31.4%. This persistent issue directly impacts academic performance. However, there are bright spots: 8th-grade math proficiency is a standout at 73%, outperforming both the district (71%) and state (61%), and civics proficiency is strong at 84%, exceeding the state average of 77%. The school also maintains a solid graduation rate above 90%, though this masks concerns about college and career readiness, as 10th-grade ELA proficiency is only 51% compared to the state's 61%.

An interesting comparison is with Q.I. Roberts Junior - Senior High School, located just 12 miles away in the lower-ranked Putnam district. Q.I. Roberts is a 5-star school in the 93rd percentile, with test scores that are almost universally superior—for example, 97% proficiency in Algebra 1 versus Keystone's 59%, and 94% proficiency in 10th-grade ELA versus Keystone's 51%. This stark contrast suggests that Keystone Heights' challenges are not solely due to its rural location or student demographics, but likely relate to school-specific culture, leadership, and instructional strategies. The school also spends less per student ($12,136) than nearby schools like Professional Academy Magnet At Loften High School ($14,574) and Interlachen Junior-Senior High School ($13,079), which may contribute to its performance ceiling.

Open Quote There is no communication between parents and teachers. If your child excels in sports you better be in their political circle or there isn't a chance at all for them. No supervision at all! Very dissatisfied and dissapointed in the district and the new clay county superintendent for knowingly allowing such politics to happen even when confronted by many parents! Wish they would build another high school in keystone. We are considering a move to get a better education and a safer environment for my children and a real chance to show to show there full potential. Close Quote
