Summary

West Broward Academy is a K-8 charter school in Margate, FL, serving 770 students within the Broward district, and it currently ranks in the bottom third of Florida elementary schools (31st percentile). The school stands out for having an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of just 2.6%—dramatically lower than nearby schools like Charles Drew Elementary School (44.9%) and Margate Elementary School (34.3%)—yet its academic performance remains inconsistent, with a volatile state ranking that peaked in 2021-2022 and has since declined.

Academically, the school shows a stark split between advanced and core subjects. It achieved 100% proficiency in Biology 1 and 66% in Algebra 1, both at or above district and state averages, but this success does not extend to most students. For example, only 39% of 5th graders and 41% of 8th graders were proficient in Science, while 6th-grade math proficiency plummeted to just 19%—a dramatic "middle school math cliff" not seen at nearby Rise Academy School Of Science And Technology, which maintains high math scores across all grades. This suggests the school may effectively prepare a select group of advanced students for high school-level exams while the majority struggle in standard grade-level courses.

Financially, the school operates on a leaner model, spending $9,998 per student compared to $18,005 at Coconut Creek Elementary School and $13,266 at Margate Elementary. The school's socioeconomic demographics shifted dramatically, with free or reduced-price lunch eligibility dropping from 69% in 2022-2023 to just 7% in 2024-2025—a figure that is likely a data anomaly but still a key differentiator. Overall, while West Broward Academy excels in attendance and advanced coursework, its core academic struggles and year-over-year instability make it a school with notable contrasts, especially when compared to the consistently high-performing Rise Academy in the same community.

Open Quote This school is terrible. Bullying is rampant. There is an extreme lack of communication from administration. It looks great but parents are not allowed in the school. They ask all families to sign a school charter that is full of false information about what they will do as a school. It is a charter, on a lottery system. But worse than our are public school. This charter should 100 be shut down or investigated by Broward County schools for administration, safety, and more Close Quote
