Summary

Newark Charter School is a public charter school in Newark, Delaware that serves 3,047 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This sizable school has a distinct performance and characteristics compared to traditional public schools in the area.

Newark Charter School consistently outperforms the state average on standardized tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, 73.86% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 38.72%. Similarly, 79.25% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in math, compared to 42.17% statewide. The school has also effectively addressed attendance issues, with chronic absenteeism dropping from 20.4% in 2023-2024 to just 6.0% in the following two years. Additionally, Newark Charter School maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 16.5 to 16.8, which may contribute to its academic success.

When compared to other nearby charter schools, such as MOT Charter School and Odyssey Charter School, Newark Charter School significantly outperforms these schools on standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. The school's performance is also notably stronger than that of nearby traditional public schools, such as The Bancroft School and Douglass School, which struggle to achieve proficiency rates above 15-20% in many subject areas. This highlights the potential benefits of the charter school model in delivering improved academic outcomes.

Open Quote Newark Charter is the finest example of a public school in the state for Academics and Decorum. As a public charter school, where students are picked from a random lottery, their academic achievement is what our other Delaware schools should strive to achieve. With limited resources, this school and its children exceed nearly every barometer of what is perceived to be academic proficiency. The staff and administration make no bones about the fact that they expect their students to apply themselves and the results speak for themselves. If only our other public schools would push themselves and their students to do more. Close Quote
