Odyssey Charter School

Summary:

Odyssey Charter School is a public charter school in Wilmington, Delaware that serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade. With a diverse student population, the school consistently outperforms the state average on standardized tests, particularly in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Odyssey Charter School's academic performance is impressive, with 63.59% of 5th graders proficient in ELA compared to the state's 44.13%, and 53.19% of 4th graders proficient in math compared to the state's 39.12%. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.0 to 13.8, suggests smaller class sizes and more individualized attention. While Odyssey's spending per student is slightly higher than the state average at $11,529, this investment appears to be paying off in the form of strong academic outcomes.

When compared to nearby Newark Charter School, Odyssey's performance is still strong, but there is room for improvement to reach the level of academic excellence seen at Newark Charter. Additionally, while Odyssey's diverse student population is a strength, the school should ensure that all students, regardless of their background, are receiving the support they need to succeed, particularly in areas like science, social studies, and math performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has been enrolled @ OCS K-5th grade. She has excelled at this school and continues to be academically advanced when compared to her peers in other schools. She is currently reading at a 9th grade level & would be considered a honors math student in other schools. I would recommend this school to any parent. Don't be put off by the Greek language offering, we are not of Greek heritage but I love that my daughter now speaks a foreign language with ease. Only concern ... where to enroll her once she completes all available grades at OCS. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
